Make This DIY Sun Hat Basket Using Dollar Tree Supplies!

This easy Dollar Tree project will show you how to make a basket from a sun hat! It can be used as decoration or as a place to put your keys and sunglasses when you get home.

You can even use it to hold fruit like I am! Our lemon tree produces a gazillion lemons each week so I use these to deliver lemons to the neighbors. The handles are only for decoration, so don’t expect to do any heavy lifting with this hat basket. 🙂

Homemade Straw Sun Hat Basket

If you’ve read any of my other posts, you know I’m in love with dollar store craft projects. I could see buying a bunch of these hats and using them as decorative items to hang on the wall, too.

Supplies needed:

  • Sun Hat
  • Cork Ribbon
  • Hot Glue

Yes, you can get ALL of your supplies at Dollar Tree, or you may already have them on hand! Woot!

This basket would be super cute, displayed next to these decorative mason jars or by this dollar store farm stand.

Choosing a sun hat

Sun hats are a dime a dozen at the Goodwill, Dollar Tree, and even in my closet LOL. To pick the best sun hat for this craft, avoid hats with embroidery because they will fall apart when you cut into it. You can buy a hat that is braided together. That way, you can cut it without ruining the whole hat.

What type of glue to use for this project

I use low temp hot glue because it dries quickly. I purchased my hot glue gun from Michael’s (on sale, of course) and my glue sticks from Dollar Tree.

Get your supplies. Cut the brim off the sun hat. You can also do this by grabbing the end of the weave on the brim and pulling it to unravel.

Once you have the brim fully removed, use scissors to clean up and even out any edges.

Flip over your hat so it is a bowl shape and cut two 4-5 inch sections of cork ribbon for handles.

Use hot glue to attach them to either side of the hat, like handles. Remember, the handles are purely for display purposes. Do NOT try to carry a basket full of lemons with the handles. Ask me how I know… 😉

Allow time for drying, then put out on display!
