Homemade Gryffindor Layered Soap

Ingredients Needed:

Supplies Needed:

Most of these supplies you’ll already have on hand if you’re a crafter, especially if you’ve made soap before. If not, there’s a small investment to get started with soap making, but Amazon has some awesome prices compared to big box stores. Sometimes you can get lucky with soap supplies at Michael’s, too. Don’t forget your 40% off coupon!

*NOTE: Suspension soap is a bit thicker when melted compared to regular melt and pour soaps. This allows glitter, jojoba beads, etc. to be suspended within the soap mixture as opposed to falling to the bottom as it will with regular melt and pour soaps. You do not have to use this soap if you don’t have it.

Working with melt and pour soap

Melt and pour soap is easy to work with, but be careful not to overheat it.

If you burn the soap, it may not recover!

Psst… have you read my soap making guide yet?! I included how to get started, plus some of my tips and tricks – learned from trial and error. 😉

The good thing about melt and pour soap is that it’s not nearly as finnicky as other soap making methods. You can slowly heat and then stir until melted and reheat if needed.

How long does it take for melt and pour soap to harden?

Melt and pour soap is a great option for beginners because of how easy it is to make!

A homemade batch can take anywhere from 4-6 hours to harden, depending on factors like the temperature and humidity in the room.

Remember not to pull the cooling soap out of the mold too soon. Giving it time harden will avoid ruining your product with air bubbles or streaks that are difficult (and sometimes impossible) fix later on.

Why isn’t my soap lathering?

Do you prefer a super sudsy soap? Adding a few tablespoons of coconut oil can help achieve this.

Coconut oil will create little bubbles are not as rough on the skin as soap’s natural ones; they work to combine existing suds while building up their foundation for bigger volumes of foam.

What is the shelf life of melt and pour soap?

Melt and pour soap bases are a great choice if you’re looking for an affordable, versatile option to make your own soaps.

If not immediately used after purchase, store them in air-tight plastic storage containers which will keep it fresh longer than other soap bases on the market!

Due to their shelf life melt and pour soap base let you create endless bars of handmade goodness. These are perfect products to sell at craft markets!

Why is my soap sweating?

If you notice your soap “sweating” this is due to the glycerin in the soap.

Glycerin in soap attracts the moisture from the air which form beads of sweat on the surface of soaps. It is also the element in soap that helps moisturize skin for that silky smooth feeling.

While a lot of melt and pour soaps do include glycerin you can find alternative bases without – just check the label 🙂

Is melt and pour soap good for skin?

Melt and pour soap is an easy-to-use product that will moisturize your skin. Melt and pour soaps are basically made up of lye water glycerin oil which have gone through a saponification process making them safe on the skin.

It’s important to use high-quality ingredients from trusted brands that your skin will thank you for later!
