Tips for Painting Halloween Terracotta Pots

To begin this project, you are going to need to prep your clay pots for painting. If they have a sticker tag on them, you will need to soak the pot in warm water and then clean the surface to make sure the sticky residue is removed prior to painting. Same goes for dirt.

Make sure that if you need to clean your pot prior to painting, you allow the flower pot time to dry. Terracotta loves to absorb water, so it can take hours for it to fully dry.

Depending on the paint you are using, you may need to use a base coat or a couple coats of paint in order to get nice bright colors on your Halloween flower pots. Then allow them to dry and seal with a craft sealant.

We just used Mod Podge to seal our clay pots, however, if you are planning on placing these flower pots outside consider sealing with a clear water based spray acrylic.

  2. Add a jagged black mouth about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the pot and two eyebrows about ¼ inch from the brim of the pot.
  3. Paint white eyeballs about ½ inch in diameter just below the eyebrows. Allow the paint to dry completely.
  4. Paint on the dark part of the eyeballs and any additional details. Allow the paint to dry completely.

To add details to the Vampire Pot:

  1. Paint the top rim of the purple pot with a loose “v” shape that continues around the top of the pot.

To add details to the Ghost Pot:

  1. Draw on the details you plan to add (eyes and open mouth) with the pencil.
  2. Paint in the drawn eyes and mouth with the black paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Add a coat of craft sealant to each pot and allow it to dry completely. Then get ready to display them because they’re done!
